The project aims to modernise the solid waste management system in the Grand Nokoué region of Benin, which includes 5 communes with an estimated population of 2.73 million. This operation is the result of the Clean Oceans Initiative, a joint effort to develop and implement sustainable projects to reduce ocean pollution, with a particular focus on plastic waste. The project has several components. These, identified at this stage, are as follows:
- The design and construction of sorting units at 60 communal collection points (‘PR’).
- The construction of 4 sorting centres, to be located in the communes of Adjarra, Sèmè-Podji, Abomey-Calavi and Ouidah.
- The construction of 4 composting units, located on the same sites as the sorting centres.
- The construction of a biogas unit at the Sèmè-Podji sorting centre.
- Making the Ouèssè and Takon landfill sites environmentally safe.
